We have been incredibly lucky to work with a range of different clients with different styles and different interior design needs. We’ve worked with aged care facilities, to restaurants to retail outlets and more. Some projects are more challenging than others and some briefs more detailed. There is a lot involved from when we get a brief to the final design – and everything in between.
Most recently, we were lucky enough to be approached by the fabulous team at Somewhere Over Coffee in Rainbow Bay. They were looking at rejuvenating a space that was previously an Asian style restaurant by turning it into a beautiful, coastal cafe. The most important element was to inject some real life and personality in the space.
Firstly, we met with the client and worked on the brief together.
The main points of the brief were as follows;
- Convert an Asian restaurant to a coastal cafe.
- Will need some structural changes including changing the location of the coffee machine and adding a cake display cabinet.
- FF&E (furniture selections, space planning, accessories, features to give it some interest)
- Currently, the design is a little boring. It needs something to make it more exciting, especially during the day.
- Location is on a corner. Keep this in mind as it has the potential to have a nice layout because of this.
- Happy to repaint and replace joinery if needed.
- Remove Menu TV screens.
- Flooring to remain.
- Exterior brick must remain as is.
- Would like some greenery.
With this brief in mind, we created the following sketches that follow.

After we presented the attached concept, the client approved the scheme. We had to move quickly as he wanted it completed prior to Christmas last year.
The client had his own tradespeople he wanted to use for the renovation work. So, we started putting together a quote for the furniture, wallpaper and accessories etc. It was important that we worked with him to ensure this was within his budget before we started placing orders. We arranged for all of the suppliers to deliver the furniture on the same date, where we met them on site to oversee the placement and installation.
Everything was installed prior to our Christmas deadline with the exception of only the feature pendant lights, as these had a longer lead time. In January, we caught up with the customer back at the restaurant to have photos taken. Everything was looking as fantastic as the day we installed it.
We thoroughly enjoyed working on this project and was proud of our ability to deliver on the brief and transform an Asian restaurant, to a gorgeous coastal cafe. Through street art, textured wallpaper and vibrant fabrics and greenery, we created a special with its own vibrant personality and style.
